This is based on the African culture of sharing and pulling together efforts and resources for the common benefit of all the community members. This program aims at empowering the community members to individually and collectively learn and respond to the needs of the society each time they arise, all in the spirit of unity in giving for the common good and prosperity. At the same time, the program offers the opportunity for individual people from diverse backgrounds to interact and know each other. This promotes cultural exchange, and friendship as well as national, regional, and global peace. In general terms, the program identifies and places both local and foreign volunteers/interns in local projects. The activities in this program are categorized as follows:-

• Short-term Volunteer Placements.

• Midterm Volunteer Placements.

• Long-term Volunteer Placements.

• Work camp Volunteer Opportunities.

• Local Professional Volunteers’ Forum.

What kind of work are volunteers with CELTRA involved in?

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities with CELTRA depending upon your area of interest, financial considerations, length of stay in Kenya, skills, experience, and whether you want to work within a city location or in a rural setup in the country. Such opportunities are always available in areas such as Children's homes or orphanages, youth groups, community schools, community health facilities, other development agencies, and other community development projects.  Practical examples of work conducted by former CELTRA’s volunteers include:

  • Assisting teachers with their work in schools.

  • Manual work e.g. painting a building, flower gardening, providing labor in construction work.

  • Assisting or working with social workers in carrying out their duties in children’s homes or orphanages.

  • Teaching artistic skills like music and drama to the young people in the children’s homes or orphanages.

  • Taking children from the orphanages for recreational outings e.g. picnics and other sporting activities.

  • Helping with the administrative duties at CELTRA’s office and with other partners.

  • Assisting with writing grant proposals and follow-up of the same at CELTRA’s office.

  • Working with medical officers in the local community health centers or facilities.

  • Assisting in research in health and agricultural fields.

  • Working with other environmental groups in the community.

More specific roles and tasks to be undertaken by the volunteers are discussed with the volunteers and interns upon their arrival at CELTRA’s office during their orientation.
